Presentation of the Museum

The Museum of Fine Arts was created in 1844 with an art collection acquired since 1841 by the “Société des Amis des Arts”. Since its creation the museum of Fine-Arts of La Rochelle is located on the second floor of the Crussol d’Uzès mansion, an Episcopal palace built during the reign of Louis the XVIth. Under the auspices of the “Société des Amis” and the first curators, the painters Édouard Pinel and Tibulle Mary Furcy de Lavault, the collection was enlarged during the XIXth century thanks to many purchases at the Salon, the regional artists and the donations and bequests.

The museum owns a collection of about 900 paintings and drawings; however the place has a limited space to show its treasures. That’s why the museum has established a policy of regularly renewed presentation. An artist or a group of people is invited each year to create their own exhibition with art works from the museum in order to propose various points of view and new discoveries.

The Museum of Fine Arts offers a rich panorama of European paintings from the XVth to the early XXth century. The XIXth century is most widely represented with works of Camille Corot, Paul Huet, Gustave Doré and other realist artists. The native artists of the region such as Eugène Fromentin, William Bouguereau, Théodore Chasseriau have a special place in the museum and they reinforce the core of academic and oriental painting.

Aside the paintings of the beautiful views of the port of La Rochelle by Paul Signac and Albert Marquet, the XXth century is also illustrated by the outstanding works of Aristide Maillol, Antoine Bourdelle, Alberto Magnelli, Gaston Chaissac, Maurice Denis...alternatively exposed.
